In the Rumi / rheumy / roomy mode of living, there’s ample space to be mawkish one day or one moment, then raucous the next. So it is here. We have plenty of schlubs wreaking havoc on our bus today, unlike those souls on the train yesterday who went through a most eventful ride. These bus-riding schlubs, well, they all want a shot at driving the bus, being in control, steering the wheel, punching the accelerator to beat the yellow traffic signal, or braking gracefully to let random pedestrians navigate the crosswalk without fear of being run-over. The thoughtful, mawkish driver from Thursday has given way to the raw-instinct raucous driver on Friday. Yesterday, the cold, death-strewn woods of suburban Balto., Md., after a horrific train wreck; today, the pulsing, geothermally heated discotheque floors of Reykjavik! Björk’s on fire here, perfect for an early-January Friday free-for-all!
BestLine Racing Society Recap:
A few post-press-time connections from last night’s (Thursday’s) late action: At New Orleans, the finale went to #2 Handsome Harold (.532 Win Prob / 0.88-1 Fair Odds / 1.26-1 Premium Odds) at $5-even — disclaimer: this race was lousy with first-timers. At Chas. Town, W.Va., #8 Cayenne Creek (.373 / 1.68 / 2.22) won Race 3 for French Guiana at $13.40. At Vinton, La., #5 Take Her Away (.227 / 3.41 / 4.29) won Race 3 for Natasha Bedingfield at $13.60; in Race 7 it was #1 Pickin Ana Grinnin (.181 / 4.52 / 5.63) making sure her backers were all smiles at $14.60.
As for today, Friday, prior to this evening’s last-track-standing, it was, in first-post-time order, starting with the earliest: Laurel, Aqueduct, Oaklawn, Fair Grounds, Santa Anita & Turfway.
Starting at Laurel, Md., for Race 3; in it, #2 Sun Streaming (.486 / 1.06 / 1.47) beamed into the winner’s circle at $6.20. In Race 7, #3 Thunder Buggy (.312 / 2.21 / 2.85) rumbled home in front at $9.60.
To Hot Springs, Ark., and Race 1 there, in which #2 Sistersouttachrome (.316 / 2.16 / 2.80) and #1 Natural Touch (.190 / 4.26 / 5.32) combined on your winning $40.20 exacta whose premium price was $35.39. Next race there, #1 Miri a Coincidence (.137 / 6.30 / 9.22) caused an incident on the toteboard via a $58-even upset; completing your winning $284.60 exacta was #7 Forsaken (.162 / 5.17 / 6.41), with the premium price on that comboa (comboa!) being $136.64. In Race 4, #2 Born Flawless (.170 / 4.88 / 6.06) could not be blemished in this field at $14-even; yea, verily, this win mutuel was 12¢ shy of the premium price, but we understand if you decided to sacrifice these half-dozen centavos upon the Altar of the God of Doing Business via the Parimutuels — after all, it was the same 6-1! We report, you decide.
The opener from New Orleans went to #9 Carlos Punch (.164 / 5.10 / 7.54) at $24-even. In Race 5, #8 Missionaire (.196 / 4.10 / 5.12) was in the same boat as the winner of Race 4 at Oaklawn — winning at $12-even and paying a mutuel a few cents shy of the prescribed premium price of $12.24; yet it was 5-1 no matter how you cut it. However, there was no disputing the $203.40 exacta, which was completed by #7 Bolt From Above (.150 / 5.67 / 8.33) and had a premium price of $95.53.
On the Arcadia, Calif., card, Race 2 went to #3 Violet Storm (.425 / 1.35 / 1.82) at $7.40.
BestLine Racing Society Nightcap:
Still riding the crest of the overlay wave at Chas. Town. (Plus, Sam Houston, which opens tonight, does not seem to be loved by the rest of the 49 states when it comes to wagering platforms; TEJAS! Yeeeeeeeeehawwwwwww!)
