wordoftheday09212022

Look at that example sentence…

Great word! Merriam-Webster & Workman Page-A-Day Word of the Day never fail!

We’ve always preferred the modest to the gigantic. In our musical tastes from the end of the last century, for example, we always had a healthful mistrust of U2 while preferring Echo & The Bunnymen. Same goes for us eschewing The Pearl Jams while championing The Pavements. We have preferred the ones true to the art instead of those truer to the almighty dollar or the pound. Elsewhere, think of the biggest sellers like Wonder Bread or Miller Lite; there’s a time and place for them, but just because they are the biggest and most popular, does that necessarily mean they are the best? No, it does not! And for this reason, we never wanted to be big just for the sake of bigness; we were entirely opposed to shilling just for the money.

Now, we all remember Dick Mitchell, a genius to some, beyond reproach. BUT, truly, he was just as human as you and me, a mere mortal with feet of clay. It all was going pear-shaped when he started flogging laundry rings and MLM audiotape sets of Earl Nightingale pep-rally talks. Damn. The legends die hard.

But even before that, we observed some of Mistah Mitchell’s best buddies; you’d know them by name, like that. These are guys who had groupies, they were so big; they had followers (some of them female, too, probably) who would kill for them. These buddies of Mitchell’s, they wrote books, went on tour, had armies of disciples.

But then we saw these selfsame buddies shilling for some half-rate handicapping service — a service they would never even consider using, ever. On full-page ads on the back of this continent’s so-called turf authority, no less!

When we saw that, we had seen enough. We had absorbed the moral of the story, the cautionary tale. We could not just sell-out for the quick buck.

Ah, well…
