(We have repeatedly relayed in this here Web log this stroke of impeccable timing, us & Mike Schmidt, childhood sporting hero, and there were many Sept. 27s in the 1970s & ’80s on which our mutual ball club, your Philalala Phightin’ Phillies, would mark the date by clinching a National League East title — birthday, birthday, division championship. Now, some baseball fans never get a Hall of Fame player to root for on their favorite team, and some baseball fans never get to rejoice in a World Series champeen…so, for all the past glories & special memories provided by Schmitty, well, all we can say is, many happy returns, Sir. P.S. And while you’re at it, do whatever you can in your formidable power to see that the Phillies win today to get to the postseason — another Sept. 27 clincher! — or else make sure that Arizona does not win.
