Well, now, given the posts lately on this here Web log, it surely must be Dairy Week…or something. OK, then. And in case you did not know, today is Nat’l. Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day. What?!
Yes, apparently this is A Thing. Normally, as devout Intermittent F(e)asters, breakfast is not in our lexicon, nor is lunch, and we tend to delay any solid-food consumption until 4 p.m. local time daily — it helps us keep our boyish figure, which in La-La Land, Southern Calif., is of the utmost importance. Besides, that’s when all the Early Bird Specials kick-in, or at least Happy Hour, etc. Sunday is the weekly Cheat Day. Cheat Day coming for your Superb Owl 53 tomorrow — and from 3:25 p.m. PST until 8 p.m., there’ll be at least one chicken wing dangling from our mouth at all times.
But you only live once, so, JUST FOR TODAY (hahahahhaha!), we are going to embrace the spirit of Nat’l Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day. What you see in the video is something the Food Snobs call affogato, Italian for ‘drowned’. Technically, the effect is achieved by pouring espresso onto a scoop or two of ice cream. Admittedly, the effect was tasty.

We said the opener at Fair Grounds would be contentious, and indeed the winner of that race paid $63 to win. BestLine Fair Odds on that victory were 7.85-1 — which is borderline, since we tend to set the cuttoff at 7.49-1! Hoo-boy. Race 4 was home to one overlay, seventh at 6-1. But if you were sufficiently brave in the opener, and were lenient with a horse who had an 11.3pc chance in a natural 10pc-chance 10-horse field, kudos! It was not much of a stretch.
