Tuesday Sniping: Prep-School Organ Edition

This is from St. Paul’s School in Concord, N.H., but a similar effect takes place at the old ESTABLISHMENT residential secondary schools up and down the Eastern Seaboard.

The organist at L’ville had a cheeky sense of humor. The chapel services on Sunday were at 11 a.m. and the boys filed in: hungover, stoned or perhaps even still drunk. So the organist, a spinster in her 80s with cat-eye spectacles and a pillbox hat, would play J.S. Bach BWV 140, titled Wachet Auf — in English, ‘Sleepers, Awake!’

The joke was not lost on us more than 30 years later.
