We know firsthand something of the traditional Presbyterian Way of Life. The secondary school we attended was founded in 1810 by a Presbyterian clergyman who wrote something called ‘The Unity of The Human Race’. Unlike the High Glitter and Ceremony of the Roman Catholic and even Anglican/Episcopalian Cathedrals and Rituals, the Presbyterian conduct was exactly the opposite: austere, severe, determined by an Old Caledonian no-nonsense ethic discouraging any temptation to call attention to oneself. The ancient code of one’s name appearing in the newspapers only three times — at birth, at marriage, at death — was strictly adhered to.
