Signage better than Arby’s too

One of the great blessings of sundown on the two High Holy Days on the Jewish calendar is that the streets of Los Angeles become wide-open, and the restaurants are, on these two nights, anyway, a gentile’s romp. Thank you, Yahweh!

Up and down La Brea Ave. last night, the shtreimels were out in full force, atop bespectacled bearded men in tight black trenchcoats, all looking like Hasidic spies. Those shtreimels are something else, boy, like topiary for the kepi. Good yontiff!

Today’s Stakes Pageantry: Good stuff at Presque tonight, a contentious, consecutive-stakes tripleheader. Race 4 has #3 Draw Nigh in with a longshot run; in Race 5, #1 Cat’s Holiday can do it; in Race 6, #3 Old Toy merits consideration.

Yesterday’s Activity: As always, Welcome to The Home of The Runner-Up Finish, this time nearly led by Bonkersmate Rock Session in Race 4 at Rexdale-Etobicoke Int’.

Rock Session, next to the bottom of the conventional V6 Betting Line, nonetheless garnered consideration via his OK 84 in the LifeLiner Speed Column analysis.

Rock Session was 20-1 on the morning line and four times that, 83-1, specifically, in real life. Yup, the longest shot on the board.

He was beaten three parts of a length by the odds-on choice. Yes, of course, that odds-on horse was OK on LifeLiner, and the saver exactor paid $114.50. All four top finishers were LifeLiner-sufficient, with the triactor paying $550.70 and the superactor (Leonardo DiCaprio?) paying $2,802.40, both for $2.

Also coming close while leading every step of the way pretty much was top-touted La Malaguena in the seventh at the track of eternal false hope, Kentucky Downs. Thank you, Franklin, Ky., thank you for your eternal false promises.

La Malaguena, actually third-top on the V6 Betting Line, had Fair Odds of 6-1 from a morning line of 20-1; her LifeLiner Speed Column analysis score was a top-ranked 99, the best you can get.

La Malaguena was defeated by 1&34frac34; lengths while saving the place. The winner was not findable on LifeLiner. Thanks, Franklin, Ky. Thanks a lot!

Some winners in there, but we don’t need to discuss them this time.
