Monday Boxing: Mickey Rooney, R.I.P. Edition

Met him once. Back in the heyday of the walk-in retail location on Ventura & Tujunga, he came in.

The late great Kitts Anderson was the first to shake hands with the great man. Kitts sold him a $49 booklet or some such. Only after the sale was completed did Kitts come walking back to our office and say, ‘Hey, there’s somebody out here I’d like you to meet’.

Thought it was going to be Christy Canyon or Ginger Lynn or one of those other talented actresses he was fond of. Nope. Even better. It was the great Mickey Rooney himself.

First thing, we were considerably taller than him. Even had the 50 or so years between us not been an issue, we still would have dwarfed him. Crazy.

Then we shook his hand. Another easy win for us, and we have the smallest hands around!

It lasted all around 30 seconds, but the memory of it only grows with time.

Right afterwards, Kitts and I were talking about it. ‘Man, shook the hand of a man who put it all over Elizabeth Taylor!’ we were screaming.

Kitts calmly said, ‘Yeah, but what about Judy Garland!’

And at this we were mildly abashed!

Jim Buss came in once, much later. We were not so impressed. Right away you could tell he was an idiot son. But that’s another story for later. Maybe pretty soon, when his control of the La-La Jakersz ceases to exist.
