U.N. Race an N.J. Tradition

UNITEDd Nations Stakes today at Monmouth. Remember when it was run at ol’ Frantic City? Stevie Cauthen won it! Manila won it! The late-great Ant-Man won it! Angel Cordero Jr. (who?) and the boys from the NYRA used to zip by helicopter after the last New York race and arrive just in time for the pageantry of the evening down the shore. Good times…

That was Mays Landing, McKee City, lush nighttime turf. Now the race is contested under the heat of the afternoon, on the green-painted dirt of the Oceanport cow pasture. No good. Looks like a cold-puncher’s special of the obvious issues, #2 Brilliant Speed and #1 Turbo Compressor. Oh well.
