Monday Boxing: Spencer Hawes, Basketball Adonis Edition

Clap your hands everybody
For Philadelphia 76ers
Stomp your feet, everybody
For Philadelphia 76ers
Here they come, Philadelphia
On the run, Stand up and cheer
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, Sixers

This is yet another reason the L.A. Jakers are to be hated. You think Dr. Buss would allow such a campy song to be played at his Fabulous Forum or Staples? Nope. L.A. Jakers are all style. Showtime! Deep in your heart, you know the fix is in with the Jakers. They get Alcindor, they get the Big Shaq Attaq, they get Koobie, they manipulate the rest of the League around their Championship-Ring finger. It’s as if the Jakers are run by Marsellus Wallace, pulling the strings from a deep, dark corner of one of his strip clubs. That’s the Jakers. That’s their vibe. L.A., baby! I love L.A. As Dr. Cee Lo Green would put it, “Forget you, Randy Newman. Forget you, too.”

When they won in 1983 (yea, verily, defeating those selfsame Jakers), the 76ers were not so glamorous. Billie Cunningham cried. Moses Malone wept. Even Doc J. Erving shed a tear. Same with the Philsz in 1980. All the good Irishmen wept for the cameras. Schmitty did not cry, but Dallas Green and Paul Owens wept with joy as the Champagne flowed inside the clubhouse.

The Sickers will not win anything this year or for many other years to follow. You have by now come across the adjective “Rose-less” to describe the Chicago Bulls too many times. But the Sickers are doing better than the rest of the Philadelphians. Iggles, Philsz, Flyersz, Union, Soul, Union Rags, Dick Jerardi, all taking a beating.

Clap your hands, everybody, Philadelphia 76ers…
