Race Oddity

When’s the last time you saw this?

Over at the Suffolk this afternoon, the late daily double on Races 8 and 9 paid off to holders who had either horse on a ticket. That is, no single combination sold on this double had both winners on a perfect ticket. Hard to do.

You see it often on the pick 3 or pick 4 at the smaller tracks, where the payoff is to two-of-three or three-of four. But on a daily double at a major Tuesday track like Suffolk? Unreal!

The winner of the eighth was a 51-1 shocker, #4 Gorgeous Silk. In the ninth, #4 Chief Picolo’s win at 14-1 guaranteed the double went unhit.

The 4-all double returned $58.40 for $2. (Hahahha! The win bet alone was more lucrative!) The all-4 double came back $15.40 (Hahahahha! The win bet alone was more lucrative!) Clearly, there weren’t enough wheelers amongst the bettors! Pity. A chance to take down the whole pool gone by the boards!

As an aside, both races were included in the PPV Picks Menu rundown. Alas, both eluded the detection of the Boys in the Backroom. However, research and experience show that when those guys pick a race as one of their longshot issues, the eventual win mutuels, regardless of who ends up prevailing, are much fatter than usual.
