Anze Kopitar, All Klass

Yes, it would have been much easier and more on-brand for us to lament your No. London Arse’s latest pratfall — fresh off the fail-factory conveyor belt this morning (PDT)! — as they keep letting slip their opportunities to win some hardware this year. And those chances will resume again a couple of times in the next week: Champions League second leg, the putative title-decider this coming weekend at Manchester City! But for now, we will celebrate the amazing career, leadership & genuine good-sportsmanship the man featured in today’s video lede; he just played his last regular-season home game a few moments ago.

Unlike another Los Angeles pro-sports immortal (Clayton Kershaw) who recently called it quits, Kopi was able to remain relevant to the end of his 20 years; he was still a positive influence on his team’s top line in his final season; whereas Kershaw was pretty much being avoided like Typhoid Mary in his last appearances as a Dodger. And unlike one of the players Kopitar defeated today, one Connor McDavid, Kopi did it the gracious way — no cheap shots, no unnecessary drama, just unceasing two-way intensity shift after shift, helmet down and letting the work speak for itself. Vale!

Trying to close-out this Saturday in an Anze Kopitar manner now…
