So many all-time songs from New Order to consider, but this might be the all-timer of all all-timers, just like the Iggles collapse was the collapse to end all gridiron collapses. But we digress. Such a shimmering song, this…
This song contains all the trademark New Order elements: plaintive, high-register use of the bass guitar; dramatic, compelling synthesized strings; squawking guitar; steady, propulsive percussion; and, of course, Bernard Sumner’s singsong, near-recitative vocal delivery. In all, the mood of the music & the plain, unambiguous lyrics really do evoke the whole idea of regret. And that parting-shot of a closing lyric!
Just wait ’til tomorrow
I guess that’s what they all say
Just before they fall apart…
