‘May gray’ creeps into ‘June gloom’

This long holiday weekend marks the unofficial start of summer, but maybe springtime is hanging-on a bit longer now. Even the jacarandas have not made their usual appearance by Memorial Day. La-La Land, fashionably late!

Someday we’ll write something good again, probably, maybe. Just getting tired from a new medication and general physical overactivity in the morning. Regrets to everyone looking for good wordsmithing! Or maybe you are just looking for value for your wagering dollar. We don’t know. We do what we do and that’s the extent of our participation. We report, you decide, and Dominion always wins! Eat it, Rupert! Suck it, Hannity! As Fletcher F. Fletcher said in his eponymous motion picture from the 1980s, ‘Why don’t you guys go to the gym & hump  each other?’ Or something like that. Medication! Hahahahahhahaha!

As the late, great Dr. Hunter S. Thompson frequently & fondly reminded us, ‘Writing is a hard dollar’. And he was not wrong! You got to have a lot of intestinal fortitude for it, a lot of unbreakable attention & patience, a lot of self-forgiveness and persistence. Being hooked-on that famous TV show where they prefer a response shouted at the screen every 12 secs. or so, and knowing the disposition right or wrong immediately thereafter, we are not naturally given to the kind of meaningful revising or polishing of the words we throw-up here on the screen. And the craft of good writing supposedly requires both revision & polishing! No first drafts — first drafts smell! Now what, because the only way we are capable of putting out any kind of written-word product is via the first pass only, revising & polishing can go to The Great Big Bonfire! The devil!

Again, we are hooked on the competition shows on TV where you know you are right or wrong right away, and you get another chance to go with your first pass & your gut every 12 secs. No editing, no filter, just visceral response. Likewise, when we snap a photograph, that’s it, no retouching, no ‘it’ll come out in post’, no, sir. No revising of the RAW file, just jam the jpeg as is.

So that’s how it is for us. No room for improvement, no space for craft, no obsession with the professional process. Maybe this new medication & overactivity in the morning will help us settle down and become better at long-lasting and more-effective wordsmithing. But until such time, we are happy to go with the neurons to the fingertips to the keys on the keyboard to the characters on the screen AND HIT SEND AT ONCE!

No wordsmithing, then, but maybe you can get some valuable winners, and that might be even better than revising, editing, polishing, honing & spit-shining. Big Content & Big Entertainment won’t allow it, but it will always continue to have a sacred spot here.

Thank you!
