Andy Rourke, bassist of The Smiths, dead at 59. R.I.P.
Morrissey turned out to be a jerk, Johnny Marr was unassailable and you forgot there was a rhythm section to the entire madness.
Thanks to the Swedish exchange student across the hall in McPherson during Fifth Form, we thankfully got exposed to these good 1980s English bands: The Cure and The Smiths best among them. You could never forget how, when you heard ‘This Charming Man’ or ‘William, It Was Really Nothing’ or even ‘Reel Around the Fountain’ for the first time, you knew right there that this was An Important Group — and they remain so! So, yes, Morrissey is a jerk-ass, but here’s to the low-key bassist who had to be part of it. Thank you.
