Another rainy day here in La-La Land, and for some reason this LP ended up as the soundtrack for a soggy Saturday. Who knew!

You can’t be a cynic all the time, and that’s OK. If you remember that overused poem by Rumi about the houseguests, you know that all those internal mopes have to be welcomed-in every now and again. Indeed, there’s a space for the sentimental and mawkish from time to time. And so we have arrived at today to greet them!

You know sometimes you go into one of these hipster coffee shops or latter-day ice cream parlors and the music playing over the loudspeakers could be anything from Screaming Jay Hawkins one time, to Julie London the next? Yes! You know that! It’s eclectic, yes, but maybe even nearly random or performance-art-like in its effect on you. You don’t know what to expect. Like the musical houseguests!

Anyway, the earnestness and sweetness of this song, ‘The Cherry Bomb’, has decided to reside in our headspace and soulspace for today. Yes, the lyrics are nostalgic and reminiscing for the singer, but for us as a listener, they take us back to some 35 yrs. ago when we too were ‘young and improving’. Simpler and less complicated for both the time of the song and its singer and for the time of the life of listener, but nonetheless forgiving and optimistic. ‘Holding hands meant so much, baby’! Why not! Goodness, not everything you read, see, hear or consume has to be so angsty and psychodramatic! Face-value still works!

Other good rippers on the album for play from edge-to-edge, and while you won’t see it score big by critics or art-snob music-fans, we will accept it for what it is and let its vibe immerse us on another dreary weekend day here in erstwhile sunny Southern California.
