Another amphitheater show last night. This time it was an all-Tchaikovsky programme highlighted by the virtuoso Joshua Bell as the soloist for the composer’s Violin Concerto.
Bell — ever heard of him? better yet, ever heard him? — is an all-timer, and this performance did not disappoint. By turns imperious and impassioned, Bell dictated with brilliance and love the full range of his instrument; technically and dynamically, he was impeccable, yet his was not a robotic interpretation of the classic piece. The cadenzas in particular were rapturous and soulful. Top, top, top.
Of course, the people always enjoy the finale 1812 monstrosity, complete with the USC Trojan Marching Band and fireworks and bells and cannonfire. A little clichéd by now, but we still get into it.
We were fortunate enough to be sitting with three generations of Hollywood Bowl patrons, the youngest at age 3 attending his first show. It was a clean, wholesome feeling.
