Catching-up.
The hyphen is underrated. We are generally hyphen-happy. The proofreaders & copy editors would have a conniption fit over it — not to mention the use of the ampersand as opposed to the conjunction spelled-out. In this case, in the hyphenated lede from the previous page, without the hyphen, you might think that the act of catching is up, whether that’s up as in being ‘above’ or ‘next’ or however you might interpret up. So the hyphen adds some clarity — at least to our idiosyncratic minds — that the construction is linked, joined, together; without that connection, ambiguity might arise. Or something like that. Again, we are hyphen-happy. Thank you!
