Dick Allen dead. Richie Allen dead. R.I.P.

Controversial figure for many reasons, including for his love of horse-racing and its interference with his baseball. Remember reading in one year’s edition of the Bill James Baseball Abstract about Allen’s incredible talent but his reluctance to play by the rules. One of the parts was about how if in spring training Richie Allen didn’t want to suit-up for a meaningless exhibition game because he’d rather bet the daily double at Hialeah or somesuch, then he needed a manager who would be able to understand and manage that reality. Sort of like another Allen — Allen Iverson, though we don’t think AI’s distractions involved horses.

Also remember that Dick Allen’s brother Hank Allen trained the great 1990s Eastern Seaboard sprinter Northern Wolf.

So they shipped Richie Allen out of Philly, and then brought him back after his stint with the ChiSox. But that Bill James writeup on Richie Allen and the latter’s love for the horses, well, we remember that the most.
