If it’s late-July, it’s the start of Del Mar, Saratoga, The Hollywood Bowl Friday Night subscription series. But in 2020, annus horribilis, the last of those is not taking place. Pity.
It’s always a heady experience to mix and mingle with the citizens on the concourse, the twinkling twilight serving as the perfect mood lighting to the murmur of the crowd anticipating friends, running to their seats, waiting in line for a bite to eat or to get a glass of vino. And then, to work off the stultifying effects of all that food and wine, ascending the steep steps inside the amphitheater itself, from the Pool Circle to the uppermost row, sitting a few minutes at the tippy-tippy top so as not to be overcome by vertigo, then stepping lively back down again, watching the human pageant as you yourself take part in it, admiring the fashion, chuckling at the nerds with their light sabres on certain nights, envying some other party’s haute cuisine in the boxes. Good times. Next year in the Cahuenga Pass!
