Sen. Jos. R. McCarthy (R.-Wis.) did not even reach the age of 50. After suffering professional and political disgrace, he became addicted to morphine before dying of cirrhosis. He did not live long enough to see the era of right-wing grifting whereby he could have hawked lots of various and sundry goods and medicines to his believers, sort of like how Fat Alex Jones does it now. Too bad for McCarthy.
