Confession: we spent some of our (public!) elementary-school years growing up in a town neighboring this one. Looking back, it’s almost too easy to characterize this area as the ‘Mississippi part of New Jersey’, geographically, socioeconomically, culturally, you name it. We did not have to suffer too much blatant abuse from strangers and acquaintances, but there was some. Then again, that was back in the 1970s and ’80s, when the climate was a little cooler, when not everything had to be performative and chest-thumping and attention-seeking.
