As always on this date, we remember the events that took place on the railroad tracks at Chase, Md., on the afternoon of Jan. 4, 1987. We hadn’t seen this one before, and it brings back a lot. Indeed, at the moment of impact (the 3:28 mark), something uncontrollable went off in the right frontal and temporal lobes. And yet here we are today, still in the game!

We ended up, shivering and somehow shoeless (!), in triage nearby, practically in the backyards of the homes situated alongside the tracks. Thank you to the citizens of Chase, Md., for their concern and hospitality.

Today, 33 years later, another backyard, this time in the quiet tranquility of Upper Nichols Canyon in La-La Land, warm and in shirtsleeves in the glow of the low winter sun, playing fetch with Kevork K. Kanine. Tell us that anyone ever knows ahead of time how it turns out. Tell us. We’ll wait.
