He writes the songs, yeah?

Final concert of this season’s subscription series at the local amphitheater last night. It was Lorna Luft opening for the guy in the snap above, Mistah Barrie Maniloff. Needless to say, the sonic trip in the musical wayback machine necessarily brought back a lot of repressed memories.

You can hear the history of ’murrikan popular music in the career of Maniloff. He first caught on at the tail end of the Burt Bacharach-Hal David dynasty, and you can pick out the lush arrangements and forlorn horns in Maniloff’s early stuff. Then came the disco, and again he was all in. That famous song about the showgirl and the bartender and Rico, it sounds just like the opening theme for The Love Boat or any other late-1970s TV show starring Donna Pescow or Merrill Markham. Of course, Ms. Luft could not get away without belting through the signature song of her mother (Judy Garland, if you did not know): ‘The Trolley Song’. West Hollywood was out in force with its glow sticks, sequins and glitter! Maniloff looked good, his face stretched taut with what appeared to be a flesh-colored coat of latex; we could tell he was alive by the movement of his eyeballs. Nonetheless, he’s doing just fine for a 76-yr.-old. Seventy-six!

Today

Colonial 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 11. Forty-five years later, we have to wonder if the Maniloff song ‘Trying to Get the Feeling Again’ is about ED; if ‘Could It Be Magic’ is really about using H. In other words, stuff you don’t even consider when you’re prepubescent.
