Nat’l. Burrito Day now in the U.S.A., as long as said commemoration has not been dictated (!) unlawful this year.
We are not adventurous eaters. To wit, PILIPINO (PILIPINO!) food is having a moment here in La-La Land, and we will have nothing to do with it! Keep that ube and halo-halo away! But if they make something ’murrikan enough, we will have no choice but to put it inside our mouth at mealtime. Of course, we don’t shill for just any Amero-Mechica restos. There’s a budget-friendly option right here on the eastern edge of Studio City, and they do a good job — and you don’t have to be drunk to understand the food is tasty, either! Over here, we go for the Shrimp Scampi Burrito. Again, not authentic Mechica, more Amero-Mechica, but how can you not enjoy a Shrimp Scampi Burrito every now and again, as long as shellfish do not pose an allergy risk or dietary-law conflict. A good mix of garlic, butter, white (!) rice and pico de gallo.
At the other end of town, west on Ventura Blvd. nearing the border with Sherman Oaks, go over to the Sharky’s and enjoy another shrimp burrito, this time Tempura Battered (remember, we are in La-La Land now, where the cultures get all mashed together; sorry, U.S. Rep. Steve King, R.-Iowa!) and filled with firm black beans and cabbage.
At both, have a few freshly made chips with the fire-roasted salsa. We are suckers for fire-roasted salsa, which has a smokiness and depth plain-old salsa does not offer.
Again, we are not adventurous eaters, but we are all in the bag for shrimp burritos and fire-roasted salsa. If you think of it, send a shrimp burrito with some fire-roasted salsa over to U.S. Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa. Let’s see what happens there.
