Uh, yeah. So that idea in the Mistah Frank Bruni piece yesterday, the idea of ‘projection’. Well, here we go…

Maybe you yourself have been in for a few sessions of psychoanalysis. The modern-day idea of ‘Spot It, Got It!’ is obviously a snappy way of describing this ancient psychological notion of ‘projection’. Maybe 50 years ago, it would have been put this way: ‘When you point the finger, there’s three more fingers pointing back at yourself’. Or something like that.

So Jesus Christ, key religious teacher of the First Millennium, was quoted in a book called The Bible as saying, according to the Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 7, Verse 1: ‘Judge not, lest ye be judged’. And now you know!

As well, don’t forget the concept of ‘compensation’. Remember those Holy Rollers in the late-20th Century, the guys who would rail against, say, prostitution or homosexuality. Then it turned out a few months or years later, they were engaging in the exact same practice they once railed against? Yes! That’s ‘compensation’. Be careful of people who are screaming all the time, judging and trying to disparage things. They actually might be hiding their own stuff through the defenses of ‘projection’ or ‘compensation’ or both!
