What a place at night. State-of-the-art in the late-1970s. Remember the Peb-inspired caricatures on the panels in the Pegasus, sort of like when you go to any old-timey, clubby resto nowadays and they have the caricatures on the wall of the prominent locals. Also, in the infield, the same kind of scratchy, monochromatic Panasonic video board like at the second Yankee Stadium. What a place at night, especially over the turf.
Later, the crooked Robt. Brennan opened his rebuild of Garden State Park, lost to fire also in the late-1970s, down in Cherry Hill, across the Delaware River from Philly, in 1985. That one crashed and burned (figuratively) after 15 years or so. In a nod to its big brother Pegasus up north, the top dining room at Garden State was called Phoenix, as in rising from the ashes.
New Jersey Thoroughbreds are pretty much down to Monmouth now, though fat ex-Gov. Christie C. Christie nearly tried to strangle Monmouth to death. Monmouth, never die! Monmouth forever! Christie C. Christie out! Monmouth Park in! Monmouth now, Monmouth tomorrow, Monmouth forever!
