You know, it’s part of being compulsive general-knowledge/world-geography nerds that we are drawn to the programmes of the BBC World Service and the good Marco Werman show called PRI’s The World. So when the announcement came this morning of the death of the eternal Hugh Masekela, we knew the score; the name and the greatness attached thereto were not lost on us. R.I.P.

It’s funny how some people fetishize their knowledge of Starfleet and other make-believe worlds, often to an encyclopedic degree, yet ignore the real world that spins all around them. They can name the Provincial Governor of the Planet Luxodork from the movie series Warplan Galageek, but they could not tell you the first thing about, say, South Africa or its history — a place and events therein which actually physically existed in this part of our space-time continuum! Boer, Drakensberg? No clue! Nonetheless, to each his or her own! The world is pretty interesting, too. And you can go there in real life! Bonus!

Thank you, Marco Werman. Thank you, Jackie Leonard. Thank you for enlightening us to the Planet As It Is. Thank you.
