Notice how we did not throw in a period after ‘Mr’: In British English, you throw in the period only when there are further letters remaining in the word being abbreviated. For example, ‘Dr.’ is short for ’Drive’, since the letters ‘i’, ‘v’ and ‘e’ come after the ‘r’. However, the abbreviation ‘Dr’ (without the period at the end) is short for ‘Doctor’, since the are no further letters after the ‘r’. And now you know.
