Au revoir, Aafrin Dalal. Adiós, Alice Whelan. All right, all right, ya Public Television in ’murrika fans! Take it easy! The 20th and final episode of the British series Indian Summers gets its stateside airing this evening, and there are many loose ends to try to tie up.
Not big watchers of TV, and this is not one of the greatest programmes ever broadcast. (ALF still #1 always!) However, we fancied Indian Summers for its historical template, its inclusion of various races and religions and miscegenation (!), and its gorgeous cinematography and costumes. Its manners were impeccable, and its moral ambiguities were advanced without gratuitous violence or crude language. The tension was there, but it was never overwrought or fetishistic. We’ll miss it.
Today’s Stakes Pageantry: Several on the docket across the continent, no advisories. Regrets! Or, maybe, congrats!
Yesterday’s Activity:
Track (Win Mutuels $20+/Gettable)
Aqueduct (4/1) — Race 8 was contentious, but only High-Octane Chancers and Progressive-Minded Eggheads had a bead on Dual Qualifier Macagone (85, 89), who was a forward-factor throughout, taking over at the furlong-grounds before winning by 3 parts of a length at $70-even. Good work.
Churchill (3/1) — Race 4 was not contentious, but High-Octane Chancers and Progressive-Minded Eggheads had a field-best 86 on the LifeLiner Spread Column analysis on Rhodium, who went gate-to-wire to win by 2 at $23.80. Good work.
Calder (2/0) — Panthers win at Ottawa, 4-1; Jaro Jagr, still in the league, had a goal and 2 assists for Fla.
Chas. Town (0/0) — Excitement builds among crowd at Lego competition at Shepherdstown hospital.
Delta (4/2) — Here we go for the Old-School Champeens now. Race 2 was contentious, and there were Fair Odds of 6-1 on Ruston Vow, who won by 4¾ at $35.80. Race 8 was the same, with Fair Odds on Magic Vow, who won by 1¼ at $31.40. Good work.
Del Mar (0/0) — SDSU students on alert after strong-arm robberies.
Fair Grounds (2/2) — Players of all stripes found a contentious Race 3 amongst the experienceds, with Fair Odds of 3½-1 and Dual Qualifier status (73, 76) on Imindycatbirdseat, who was a stalking-horse before taking over at the furlong-grounds to win by 2 at $32-straight. Race 5 was contentious, but only High-Octane Chancers and Progressive-Minded Eggheads had the 82 on the LifeLiner Speed Column analysis to consider on Nubin Ridge, who rallied like the champion he should have been, winning by a clean head at $21.20. Good work.
Golden Gate (2/1) — Wildly contentious Race 6 found High-Octane Chancers and Progressive-Minded Eggheads on Amanda, who had a bare-minimum rating on the LifeLiner Speed Column analysis; she went gate-to-wire anyway, winning by a clean neck at $32.40. Good work.
Hawthorne (1/0) — Visiting Blackhawks rally hard, edge Vancouver in OT, 4-3; Marian Hossa’s 11th goal of the season was the gamewinner.
Los Alamitos (1/1) — Race 3 was not contentious, but High-Octane Chancers and Progressive-Minded Eggheads had an unbeatable 99 on the LifeLiner Spread Column analysis on Seatoshiningsea, who indeed went coast-to-coast (!) to win by 3½ at $22.40. Good work.
Laurel (2/0) — 1 injured in Cockeysville fire.
Mountain (0/0) — Education Day at Wheeling Nailers game.
Mahoning (4/1½) — Race 3 was contentious, but only High-Octane Chancers and Progressive-Minded Eggheads could get any clarity out of Muddle, a good-enough 71 on the LifeLiner Speed Column analysis; she rallied like the champion she should have been, winning by 1½ at $73.60. Old-School Champeens were exclusively eligible in a contentious Race 5, thanks to Blingitonagain, Fair Odds of 5-1; he won by 1½ at $29.20. Good work.
PennNat (0/0) — Penguins edged at Buffalo in shootout, 2-1; Sidney Crosby’s 12th goal of the season was Pgh.’s lone score.
Keystone (2/0) — Host Flyers blanked by 3-nil; Radko Gudas served a 5-min. major penalty for Philalala.
Retama (1/0) — Southwest Side blaze destroys garage, classic car.
Remington (2/1) — A contentious Race 8 was open to all comers via Dual Qualifier Red Neck Okie (92, 92) and with Fair Odds of 3-1 on the conventional V6 Betting Line; he went gate-to-wire to win by 1¾ at $26.40. Good work.
Turf Paradise (1/0) — Host Coyotes edge San Jose, 3-2, in OT; Martin Hanzal scored the gamewinner.
Woodbine (1/0) — Maple Leafs edged at Montreal, 2-1; William Nylander had the Toronto goal.
Zia (2/0) — Attendance dips, revenues rise at N.M. state museums.
