Gen X-era children of Philalala are in mourning. Capt. Noah is dead at 90. R.I.P. Vale!

He used to take a slide down from the captain’s deck, but toward the end he had to descend slowly from a staircase. One of his best recurring segments involved his reciting a biography of some important figure in American history; at the end, he would always mention the date and place of that person’s death, slowing the delivery to something like, ‘…and on December 26th, 1972, in Kansas City, Missouri, Harry S. Truman, the man who brought an end to the Second World War, himself met his end at the age of 88…’, immediately after which he would start on his acoustic guitar and begin singing ‘This Land Is Your Land’. It was good stuff, and thus began our ongoing 40-year fascination with checking the obituaries every day. Nowadays, you’d be hard-pressed to find something of the same quality being fed to children from the television. Back then, it was easier to play the facts straight, unadorned, with the opinions left unsaid. Capt. Noah allowed you to think it out for yourself. Thank you, Capt. Noah.
