Set phasers to stun…or something like that….
It’s this time of year again, and what the Trekkies lack in real-world knowledge and social graces, they make up for in raucous whooping and hollering.
This was an intense programme, filled with the kind of fervor usually reserved for a revival meeting. Sub out James Tiberius Kirk for the Unassuageable, Old-Testament Yahweh, and replace the Laying-on of Hands with the split-finger Vulcan Salute — and you get an idea of the degree of devotion on display. Musically, the full force of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the CSU Fullerton University Singers combined as though they were performing a cosmic Carl Orff concert, and the slide trombones, the very voice of God, Allah and Zarathustra represented in the space of a single orchestral instrument, carried the almighty metaphor across the void.
And then the immortal Anton Yelchin as Chekov appeared on the screens, and there was an inconsolable wailing and grinding of teeth throughout the amphitheatre. Yea, verily, we admit to having seen these movies, if not the television series, and Yelchin’s impeccable Russian delivery was always the key aural takeaway. He cannot be replaced. These Trekkies should file a class-action lawsuit against Daimler-Chrysler for pain and suffering and loss of future enjoyment.
