Tuesday Sniping: Immortal Russ Roberts Edition

All right, all right, ya right-wingers! Take it easy. No, we are not switching sides. However, we do congratulate the one Libertariat who (whom?) we do not have that hard a time listening to, Mistah Russ Roberts, on the occasion of his 500th podcast.

Faux News is not Libertariat — nae, not even close. We understand they grow eyeballs and attract ratings by mainlining fear and hysteria (plus dogwhistle racism and xenophobia) straight into the jugular. It’s who they are; they cannot be helped. But for reasoned, rational and relatable pro-free-market discourse (sans the rah-rah corporatism and the gratuitous punching-down), this is what you need to be listening to. No, we will not agree with much of the discussion; however, we will at least be able to see where the other side is coming from — in other words, Mistah Russ and his (mainly) anarcho-capitalist guests provide light, without uncomfortable heat. Regardless of your politics, you could do a lot worse in your choice of economics podcasts. Check him!

In this 500th episode, go ahead and scrub over to the 63:40 mark for an idea of for the humanity of his Libertarianism; as well, the rabid Fix News/Ayn Rand crowd might be dismayed by the true Adam Smith philosophy at the 65:52 mark, concerning ‘manners’. As Mistah Roberts is fond of reminding us, Adam Smith wasn’t all shark-drown-shark; indeed, Smith was famous for writing the following in The Theory of Moral Sentiments:

Man naturally desires, not only to be loved, but to be lovely; or to be that thing which is the natural and proper object of love. He naturally dreads, not only to be hated, but to be hateful; or to be that thing which is the natural and proper object of hatred.

Thank you, Russ Roberts, for explaining to all of us what real Libertarianism is about.
