Santa Anita 4, 9

Today’s Stakes Pageantry: Live third-choice on your morning line in Aqueduct 8: #3 I’m Stoked. Also worth singling-out is #2 Kitten’s Point in Santa Anita 8.

Yesterday’s Activity: As always, Welcome to The Home of The Runner-Up Finish, this time nearly led by the hanging Whisper Onthe Wind in the Gulf opener. Beaten three parts of a length at 12-1.

Then in Race 8 there, Sheer Drama, top-touted at 15-1 on the morning line and 37-1 in real life, rallied to best all but the winner, falling 2 lengths short. The winner was the 2-1 fave, and at least she was LifeLiner-eligible with a 93 on the LifeLiner Speed Column analysis. The backup exacta, 2-1 over 37-1 in a 13-horse conflagration, paid $220.60.

Over to Laurel for the next heartbreaker, Here Comes Gary in Race 2. ’Gary was 12-1 on the morning line and 20½-1 at the off. He finished — what else? — second by 1.

Also settling for the bridesmaid role: Bright Town, 13-1, in Race 7 at Sunland.

Race 1 at Oaklawn saw five touted horseys, and they completed the winning super-duper. In truth, all five started at 8-1 or higher on the morning line; however, the win, place, show and super horseys went off at 4-1, 6-1, 22-1 and 3½-1, respectively. This was in a 12-horse field, and the exacta paid $101.60; the trifecta $1,012, for $1; the super-duper $263.61, for 10¢.
