Sir Christopher Hogwood, R.I.P.
If you’ve ever listened to orchestral music on the radio, you’ll know his name instantly. You’ll also reflexively remember his group, The Academy of Ancient Music. The presenter (heavens, not a mere disc jockey!) would announce the name of the piece, followed by ‘The Academy of Ancient Music led by Sir Christopher Hogwood’.
Culture-vultures will also know a few other Pavlovian responses to names like ‘Sir Neville Marriner conducting The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields’, ‘Roy Goodman & the Hanover Band’, ‘Otto Klemperer & the New Philarmonia Orchestra’ etc.
Which is why we always prefer TuneIn Radio to Pandora or Spotify or Apple Radio. We want the human connection of a presenter introducing the selections and then wrapping them up. We crave the dulcet tones of a sweet-voiced woman or stuffy baritone letting us know we are not alone, not in a classical-music vacuum. Good stations include world-famous WQXR-FM in New York, KUSC-FM in La-La Land (Jim Svejda is an absolute authority, but not at all a snob or a fetishist) and All Classical Portland. You can’t get that from a robot music server.
Good thing about TuneIn Radio is that there’s no interference or other unwanted hiss. If you’ve ever listened to orchestral music on the radio in the car, you know that there’s a lot of sifting, sandy static during the quieter passages, low signal-to-noise ratio. Not a problem with the TuneIn Radio.
TuneIn Radio > Pandora, Spotify, Apple Radio, etc.
R.I.P., Sir Christopher Hogwood.
