2014 Belmont Mashup from Steven Unite on Vimeo.

Labour Day Weekend, but this is the day that the immortal Thos. Durkin is choosing to depart from his announcer’s booth for good. Vale!

Tom Durkin, thank you for your excellent work throughout the years. When NYRA chose to replace the legendary Marshall Cassidy with yourself, that was a brilliant hire on their part. The same cannot be said, however, of their choice of the person replacing you. That guy is as unwanted as gentrification. We shall call him the opportunist, gentrification replacement. He is a bad choice, similar to if the Jeopardy! television programme chose Carson Daly or Ryan Seacrest to replace Alex Trebek as host.

So while we call your successor the ‘opportunist, gentrification replacement’, you will always be remembered as Thos. Durkin.

Thank you, Thos. Durkin, for your excellent racecalls throughout the years, even in the days of the nighttime Thoroughbred and harness action at The Meadowlands back in the 1980s when that place was a real racetrack.

Now, we shall not be able to listen to the audio call of any NYRA race for at least 25-30 years, not until your opportunist, gentrification replacement quits the scene.

Fortunately for this year’s Belmont, we were able to hear your call on the radio broadcast; it was way-better than the quote-unquote official call provided by your opportunitist, gentrification replacement. So here is your call of the 2014 Belmont Stakes; we are grateful it will be eternally dubbed onto this video, as if your opportunist, gentrification replacement’s call never happened.

Rest easy, Tom Durkin. You’ll be missed more than you can even suspect. Thank you.

Today’s Stakes Pageantry: Del Mar Thoroughbred Club 9, Saratoga Race Course 6 and 10 on the free page.

Probably going to be OK for #4 Jojo Warrior in Del Mar Thoroughbred Club 5, the Grade 3 Torrey Pings. In Race 7 there, two longshots to consider are #2 Magic Union and #5 Every Way.

It’s Sunday AND it’s Race 9 (!) at Monmouth, so how can you go wrong with #2 Perpetual Novena?

Albuquerque 8 has a pair of upsetters at the ready: #10 Skim the Rail, #4 Dirt Monster.

Big day in Minnesota. Sidestepping the morning-line favourite, preferring #1 Somerset Swinger and #2 Gypsy Melody instead in Race 4. In Race 5, #5 B J’s Angel can win as the fourth-choice on the morning line. Same goes for #2 Sheer Trick in the ninth.

Like the nonfavoured duo of #7 Catch the Luck and #2 Pit Alley in Fort Erie 8.

Chalky in Ruidoso 10: #2 Rebranded.

In Thistle 7, #6 Needmore Flattery has the necessary talent already.

Yesterday’s Activity: Mostly bad, an occasional acorn. Ah, well.

WMF Report:

BelTerra 6f, 1m
Los Alamitos 4½f
Mountain 1m
Thistle 6f, 1m

Arlington 1m

Nocturnal Submission: Sifting through the wreckage…

Thank you. Best wishes. Goodbye. So long now.
