June 12, 1989. Twenty-five years on now. Tempus fugit. Five years afterwards, one of us was watching the World Cup from Hollywood Park. Today, another World Cup starts, and time truly marches on. It also heals.
Such exquisite timing. To go one day before the Feast of his Patron, Saint Anthony of Padua. But also square on the day on which the Philippine Islands celebrates its independence. And also six days before Father’s Day that year.
Sons always want to take up their father’s pastimes and interests, the stuff that makes them happy. Hence things like baseball, roadtrips to see the real America, a keen observation of human behaviour (admittedly broad-brushed, especially with respect to various ethnicities), a cutting sense of humor, hard facts, general knowledge, Jeopardy! and, of course, horseracing, then and now.
