Hemingway app, huh? It will gauge your writing’s proximity to Papa’s, but you’ll never have the soul for the actual sentiment. The good part is you won’t be an anti-Semitic drunk with suicidal tendencies. The bad part is that you’ll miss out on writing things like this…

In his recently published book of letters, he ends one of his typically rambling and sarcastic rants, ‘Yours in Christian Science, Mother Eddy’. Genius!

Of course, how about this line from the story The Killers: ‘I got them tied up like a couple of girl friends in the convent’. Only Hem!

Then the coup d’ grace, the closing sentence from A Very Short Story: ‘A short time after he contracted gonorrhea from a sales girl in a loop department store while riding in a taxicab through Lincoln Park’. Come on now!

And you know all about his fondness for racing in Paris, written about in the belles-lettres memoir A Moveable Feast, in the entry titled ‘The End of An Avocation’: ‘It was gambling on horses. But we called it racing…. to make it profitable was more than a full-time job and I had no time for that’.
