BlueManGroup (Baba O’Reilly Finale) – Friday, September 6, 2013, Hollywood Bowl from Steven Unite on Vimeo.

Come on, now. This is worth an encore! How is it possible to have so much talent and beauty in this kind of package? Can we next see her in “The Devil Went Down to Georgia?” The heart beats faster just thinking of it.

Chicken’s in the breadpan, picking out dough…

As for the entirety of the BlueManGroup extravaganza this past Friday night, it was good if for nothing more than the unceasing percussion and the sheer volume of the electric instruments made one forget to listen for the droning helicopters and small aircraft buzzing overhead.

Many will consider the reworking of Bolero with musical handsaw, sitar, rollerblading electric guitarist, beatboxer, bagpipers and shofar-blower (Happy Jew Year!) to be tops.

However, for fetishists of lounge music such as ourselves, it was the space-age rendition of Jalousie that topped the evening. Esquivel himself would have been proud, and indeed there was an appearance by four Zuzu singers unlocked at the appropriate stage in the song from an equipment locker marked “ZUZU SINGERS”.

In general, the performance was a fine vehicle for indelibly good and funny memories, the sort of which marathon viewing of True Bloodsz & Crypts and The Game of The Thornsz and Dexter the Blood-Spatter Inspexter are not likely to provide. Maybe Angry Advanced Anthropoids would make for better watching. It’s hard to say. We stopped looking when they canceled the ALF Television Programme.

Free ones: Rundown…

Belmont 6, 7, 8, 9, 10
Calder / Gulf Calder 7, Calder 8, Gulf 8, Gulf 10
Short-Segment Barretts (a k a Fairplex Park née Pomona Fair) 1, 4, 6, 11

Pay-side: Today…

Arlington 8
Churchill 10
Golden Gate 5, 6, 8
Louisiana 5, 7
Monmouth 4, 6, 9
Woodbine 7, 8
Zia 11, 12

Today’s Stakes Pageantry: Going with #5 Najran Breeze in Pomona 10.

Ha! Zia 11 is on the pay-side. Hobbs, N. Mex., represent!

Elsewhere in N. Mex., going to the place where Hank & Jesse are ready to take it out on Walter & Skyler & Sol, and probably all of this could have been avoided had any of them just learned how to enjoy themselves handicapping and wagering; but that kind of storyline doesn’t sell widgets on the Amerika’s Motionpicture Channel, and so we can enjoy Albuquerque 8 without having a Mexican standoff at the windows; that’s not to say, however, that there won’t be a rolling methamphetamine laboratory idling in the parking lot there. Translation: #4 Playin Tough.

Big, big day in the Pacific Northwest, with a dozen added-money events stretching from Nootka Island to Puget Sound. What are you going to do?
Starting at Emerald, then, Race 5, for a live third-choice on your morning line: #2 Belt. Later, Race 7 is an utter scramble, and #5 Sunpenny and #1 Sanibel Harbor can do some good things. And another nonfavored duo emerges in Race 8, via #2 Hetty and #5 Business Venture.

Now up to the Hastings Exhibition for Race 3, and #2 Shrug can win it for Atlas McGaughey 3d. In Race 5, #1 Doc Can Dance seems legit. Likewise #2 Arabella’s Muse in the sixth. And #5 Andallthatitmeans in Race 7.

Race 8 is open, and your daily Colonial Penn Double-and-a-Half Stumper is represented by #3 Touching Promise, #6 Silkworm, #9 Locket. Same goes for Race 9, in which #3 Tracker and #1 Shooting Jacket are worthy.

No such imagination at the Presque, the sixth, for favored #9 Hogy.

Finally, the day’s second Colonial Penn Double-and-a-Half Stumper of the day occurs in Thistle 7, courtesy of #6 Plain Ol’ Willard, #3 Catlaunch, #2 Pyrite Personal.

Yesterday’s Activity: For a change, the service at the local Home Depot (Sherman Way, No. Hollywood, Calif.) more closely approximated that portrayed in one of their slick TV advertsz than not. Good job. Still can’t root for the Falkonz, though.

WMF Report:

Early
Albuquerque 7f
Gulf 6f
Monmouth 6f
Thistle 5½f, 1m

Rally
Monmouth 1 1/16m (T)
Woodbine 1 1/16m (WMF 12)

Nocturnal Submission: Sifting through the wreckage now. Temperatures are cooler today in La-La Land, so there is hope that there won’t be a Return to Blackout City this afternoon. We certainly cross our fingers, for your sake.

In the meantime, we know it’s a very important day for you fansz of American Gridiron Throwball, so in the name of Billie “White Shoes” Johnson, amen…

Thank you. Best wishes. Goodbye. Take care now.
