Sir Alex Ferguson retires. Though we are not Manchester UNITEd fansz, we stand in awe of his longevity and genius. Nothing else to say but, “Good work”…
In his football management, he was a Scot through and through, not given to sentiment but only to efficiency and industry; yet he was no humorless technician. You’ll always think of him on the touchline, tapping his watch during stoppage time of a tense game, chewing his gum or Nicorette like a waitress at a truck stop would. And the quotes: “squeaky-bum time” and “Football. Bloody hell…” He had all the gifts: cunning, competence, charm. Never a dull moment. English football will be a blander place in his absence.

Today’s Stakes Pageantry: Uh-oh. Bone-dry until the weekend. Kindly disregard this space for the next three editions, inclusive.
Yesterday’s Activity: Lots of flailing at long odds, except for this weird development in Race 5 at the SunRay. That one found 8-1 morning-line chance Joyful Feeling at least a Double Threat and pounded by the Hammer of the Mutuel Godsz at the windows, all the way down to 1-5! Wild. Couldn’t even get that one home, getting beat ¾ of a length. Dismal.
