Michael Jack Schmidt

"Swing...and LOOOOOOOOONG drive...watch that baby...OUTTAHERE...HOMERUN...MICHAEL JACK SCHMIDT!"

Happy Birthday to the greatest third baseman of all, Mistah Mike Schmidt.

Ah, September 27. Always a good day in the lives of Philadelphia Phillies fans of the 1970s and ’80s. Not just for Schmidt’s birthday, but for the team as a whole, which was usually clinching a division title around this time, in Chicago, in Montreal, in some other classic National League East city, wherever.

Speaking of Phila-la-la, no one who ever opened a racing page in that city will ever forget the name Craig Donnelly (from whom we freely steal the construction “PennNat” — and what about his terse, frequent description of a horse as being “capable but erratic”…just like most of the Boys In the Backroom!).

At any rate, here is a fantastic story of Mr. Donnelly’s transition from horserace picker to racehorse picker/owner/breeder:

Overcoming grief was no sure bet for horse racing’s Craig Donnelly
