Your Saturday Stakes Sweep: July 16, 2011

OK. After a brief breather, we’re back. And with this lineup, we’ll need all the oxygen we can take in…

The eighth at Arlington, the Sprint, is a scramble. It’s covered via pay-per-view, as are the eighth at Ellis, the Don Bernhardt, and Races 6-8 at Colonial, the Kitten’s Joy, the Va. Oaks and the Va. Derby, respectively. Best wishes with those!

The fourth at Hollypark is the Landaluce; it’s on the free page.

Now, on with the countdown…

The ninth at Belmont is the Grade III Jaipur, where #7 Right One is that, at least from this corner.

Plenty of outrageous added-money activity at the Colonial, and Race 4 is the Chenery. In it, #11 Getupwiththesun can rise up for the surprise. The race after that is the fifth, the Tippett, and throw a serape over the field, it’s so close. We side with #1 Jazil’s Song.

Delpark checks in with some nice ones, among them the ninth, the R. R. M. Carpenter Jr. Memorial, plus you remember Ruly III, his son, Lawrenceville graduate and onetime owner of the Philadelphia Phillies, including in 1980, when they won the World Serious (thanks, Bugs!) for the first time. Anyway, #7 In the Juice has great upset potential! And in the two-hoss showdown that is the 10th, the Grade II Delaware Handicap, #3 Havre de Grace gets the slight nod.

A bit open in the ninth at Hollypark, the Grade II A Gleam. We prefer #6 Mildly Offensive.

Nice upset brewing in the 11th at Oceanport, where #1 Withgreatpleasure can do it in the Serena’s Song.

A bonus shocker from the River in the seventh, the Queen City Oaks. Wide open, and we will welcome #2 Willa Wando in the winner’s circle, with any luck.

Now to Suffolk (!) for its eighth, the Rise Jim. Ready to light up the tote is #2 Sultan’s Prince.

For less parimutuel excitement, try the eighth at Woodbine, the Toronto Cup, and #8 Clement Rock.

Extra for experts: The N.Y. Derby is the eighth at the Finger, and #2 Socialsaul can upset. …That’s the opposite of Race 7 at the Thistle, the Geo. Lewis Memorial, where #1 Catlaunch figures strongly.

All right, stakes-lovers! Now we can exhale!

Best wishes for a prosperous Saturday.
