The cardiac muscle working

Clear, warm day here in sunny-again Southern California, so a good day for hitting the public courts and taking some shots. One segment of the 90-min. sesh shown here.

It’s also a big social event, going to the world-famous Park of the Stars, Beeman Park in Studio City. One of the greatest entertainment attorneys ever brought two shopping bags full of grapefruit, one bag filled with white, the other with pink, he had picked from his second house at Palm Springs. We thank him for his generosity while shoving four of the fragrant fruit into our tennis bag.

‘Hey, Bush! How are ya’, mate? Happy new year!’ we shout out. His name is not Bush, though he is the frontman for that famous band. It’s easier for us to say ‘Bush’ than his overly British real name. He smiles and waves; he is a good-looking man, more so with a curly new hairstyle, belying his age, which is pushing hard into the mid-50s now.

Then the bass player for the emo rock band, you know him, smaller-guy, short like us, but fit and whacking balls with a guy twice his size. We wish the bass player a happy new year, and he reciprocates, adding, ‘Rabbit!’ Rabbit? Apparently it is the Year of the Rabbit now, the Lunar New Year details lost on us since we are not Chinese or Vietnamese or any of those Eastern-type observers but rather lapsed Roman-Churchgoers from the colonized Pilipinas.

They’re all good guys, and, in this case, tennis is the great leveler. It strips away any mystique or awe or unapproachability we might have and reminds us that, hey, we’re all just trying to get that next ball over, you know? We are grateful for these people and all our fellow park-goers for the opportunity to step away from our usual introverted routines and to be gregarious for a few minutes each day. Thank you!
