Not a Hart Trophy-calibre performance on Wednesday

Tale of two periods last night at Staples: Kings shoot out to 3-nil lead inside of the opening 14 mins. In the third period, Washington mounts a furious fightback in which all its considerable offensive flair is displayed, and they tie the contest with 3:22 left in regulation, courtesy of a 3-goal outburst in a 15-min. stretch.

As always, the 3-on-3 OT was full of many palpitations and much swooning from the fans of both sides. Bond Villain Milan Lucic fed Jeff Carter on the instant winner at 2:50. A most entertaining contest.

Today’s Stakes Pageantry: None today, but Your Va. Poly Hokies do battle with The Hurricanes of The U this evening in the quarterfinals of the ACC men’s basketball tourney in Wash., D.C. Last Saturday at Blacksburg, Va. Poly demolished then-7th-ranked Miami in the final regular-season conference game for both. Now, The U will be looking for medieval-style payback in this national telecast. The U is a 9-pt. fave. We’ll see.
