Monday Boxing: Tony Gwynn, R.I.P., Edition

Will never forget sitting in the left-field pavilion one evening at Chavez Ravine, the ball slicing off Tony Gwynn’s bat, then Brett Butler diving in vain to try to catch it, then the ball squirting all the way to the wall and dying in the left-field corner, Butler still motionless — and there’s Tony Gwynn scooting around the bases for an inside-the-park home run. And it was a salami, no less!

Always easy to root against the Doyersz. Always.

Back to today, and the capitulation of the Iberian Peninsula to its northern continental superiors is complete. Friday is was Nederlands 5 and España 1. This morning it was Deutschland 4 and Portugal nil. Combined score: the Industrial North 9, the Mañana Peninsula South 1. The divide in the European Union is brought into even sharper focus, and not just economically and politically, but athletically now, too!

Thank you. Best wishes. Goodbye. ¡Adiós!
