Today’s Stakes Pageantry: Aqu 3 today was a stakes race, and there was no time to do anything about it.

Yesterday’s Activity: We are used to seeing our 8-1-and-higher-on-the-morning-line touted horseys get bet-down, sometimes way down (looking at you, Retama!). But sometimes it happens the other way.

Behold Race 8 yesterday at Keystone, which later became known as Philadelphia Park and nowadays is called ParXXX, complete with showgirl cocktail waitresses and all manner of gaming options.

A 4½-1 shot on the morning line, third-lowest there, what do you think such a horse should go off at? Three-to-one? Five-to-one? Maybe 7-1?

We are naturally hamstrung here with our touting, restricting our recommendations to those horseys who are 8-1 on the morning line or higher. That is what we must tell you these days. When a horsey is 4½-1 on the morning line, we have to pull the El Pass-o, the ol’ Pass-adena, either the one here in Cali. or the one over there in Maryland.

Yet somehow this 4½-1 morning-line horsey on the morning line gets ignored, shoots up to the fourth-choice in the wagering at 10-1. Now what?

Yea, verily, Zipped Code, one of ’em veritable Triple Threat Horseys, paid $22.60 up top. Then in Race 9, the touted Stone Broke, 12-1 on the morning line and LifeLiner Speed Column-eligible in a contentious race, won and paid $36.80 straight. No late double, natch, but with morning-line fave and LifeLiner Speed Column contender Vagabond Lass winning the seventh, at an unbelievably disregarded 7-1, the reachable pick-3 for the final sequence was 1,000-1.
