Tuesday Sniping: Generic Ballparks Edition

All are the same. They have that stark light fixture towering over the right-field bleachers; the videoboard glows menacingly on the left-field side. The all-purpose antiseptic ashtrays of the 1970s (Three Rivers, Riverfront, Veterans) have given way to gentrified Disney. HOK is not A-OK.

Seattle boysz did it right, between the two football and baseball stadia. They are unique. Petco OK too. Turner, Citizens, Citi are pretty much the same place.

Also, smaller seating capacities have gentrified the game. No more 50¢ general admission seats in the 700 Level at the Vet, no more Hot Pants Patrol. Everything is preprogrammed, helicopter baseball. You must feel and interpret the way we want you to! Where’s Geo. Foster when you need him? Rennie Stennett? Willie Montanez?

Speaking of feeling and interpreting the way they want you to, that must be the reason ESPN’s afternoon programming bloc consists of three or four shows all with the same content, just different branding of the identical content. Comedy Central does it too, with Stuart being followed immediately by Kolburt. NBC & CBS in the hour before primetime, two shows of identical content, back-to-back, just different titles and hosts. This is the trend.

Be yourself, question what they splash up on the screen there. Don’t let The Corporations or The State figure it out for you. Are they trying to help you, or just get something out of you that is not really enriching? When in doubt, revert to the BBC or Al Jazeera or some other media outlet without sponsors. Tyvm.
