van cliburn

R.I.P.

Another link to the Old Man, lost. What middle-class household didn’t have this iconic cover peering out from the album racks?

Bobby Fischer was in that same era of competitive Cold War intrigue. They (Fischer, Cliburn) both had the genius, but they both had a touch of the genius manqué about them after reaching the summit. This is how it must be, it seems. We remember the surprise of being disabused of the faulty preconception that Van Cliburn was some Old World European, or at least a patrician. Tejas! Tejas! What’s coming out of Tejas nowadays? No good, Johnnie, no good.

Free ones: Rundown…

Aqueduct 1, 4, 6, 9, 10, 11
Gulf 2, 5, 6, 8, 11
Santa Anita 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 11

Pay-side: Today…

Tampa 5
Turfway 3, 6, 7, 8, 9
Hawthorne 6
Oaklawn 7, 8, 9
Turf Paradise 4, 5
Sam Houston 3, 6
Sunland (bonus) 6, 10, 11

Today’s Stakes Pageantry: More stakes than a vampire-killaz convention at Mastro’s! All right, all right, ya ALF-loversz!

Free are Aqu 9, 10, the Grade III Tom Fool and the Grade III Gotham.

Also gratis are SA 5, 6, 9, the latter two being Grade Is, the Las Virgenes and then the Kilroe. High temp of approx. 86°F in Arcadia this afternoon, so of course it’ll be fast & firm, as it always should be here in So. Calif. As for the Big ’Cap, it appears woefully formful. Regretsz!

Pay-side coverage includes Hou 6, OP 8, TP 9.

If the layoff does not interfere, #6 Distorted Legacy possesses the bona fides in the eighth at Sam Houston, the Jersey Lilly.

Perhaps a mild upset in store at Delta, Race 2, the Fremont, via #8 Hazards of Love.

Yesterday’s Activity: National Unplugged Day continues. We pull the plug on this section today! Ill-wishers, continue to have a wonderful weekend nonetheless!

WMF Report:

Early
Fair Grounds 6f
Hawthorne 6f
Los Alamitos 4½f
Laurel 6f
Tampa 6½f
Turf Paradise 6f

Nocturnal Submission: Chas. Town, Race 9 (10:52 p.m. EST / 7:52 p.m. PST), features a potentially dynamic duo (shoot, boy, even one of them will do!): #9 Southern Folly, #2 My First Sip. …The third at Delta (7:37 / 4:37) has #4 Wilko Gal in with a chance. …A pair of 20-1s who probably are not that far-fetched in Delta 4 (8:04 / 5:04): #7 Mr Rail, #4 Sleek Ezeke. …Now to Golden Gate, the sixth there (6:28 / 3:28) for #7 Perfect Soulmate. …Get the brickbats ready after the running of PennNat 6 (8:16 / 5:16), in which we tout four, invariably none of whom will finish in the top four: #5 My Dream Catcher, #1 Horseshoe Lake, #9 Two Taverns, #4 Citizen Kat. …

Thank you. Best wishes. Goodbye. Next time!

Did Al Swearengen {Ian McShane} of Deadwood say that about Johnnie? All the above interesting characters, but couldn’t come close to the imaginations at Cynthia!!!!!!!

  2. KGreen says:

Al seems similar to ballgame selectors, they seem to make themselves scarce on “settlin up” day

Is Kentucky like that? I bet the Loyal Order of Ky. Cols. serves as a strong deterrent to that sort of thing. Kind of like the original Tejas (Tejas!) Rangersz. Tyvm…

      • KGreen says:

How about threats from the State Gov. over having Mobile Homes {E. Ky. trailers} built to code. So to insure safety & insurance costs. A losing battle that almost had 1 “done In”. I’m a Col. but would imagine not in Good Standing. No Derby Breakfast for me. Did get a Col. for a Shady jeweler in Tejas though. Probably in goood standing.
