Part of the Pavement ethos was to never get too big, the same as it was for Echo & The Bunnymen. Both were content to let the stadium rock superstardom fall to the others. For The Bunnymen, they didn’t truly care that a bloated U2 or a swollen Simple Minds got all the publicity. Likewise, as we’re about to find out in this video, The Pavement Band took drowsy aim at such contemporaries as The Bloated Pumpkins and The Bloated Pilots…
Both The Bunnymen & The Pavement knew they were good; they were in it to make music, corporate handlers be damned. In short, both tended not to take themselves too seriously or commit their press clippings to memory. Thank you, boysz! Thank you for your example. We pray we do justice to your memory.
Similarly, the great cineaste Woody Allen might be unsavory in some regards, but we think he got it right when he won an Academy Award for directing Annie Hall in 1977 but did not attend the ceremony, which came in conflict with his standing gig playing clarinet at a New York club.
P.S. Can’t imagine anyone in The Echo or Pavement or Mistah Woody Allen posting 40,000-plus times on the Interwebsz, either. Can you?
Saratoga, we ask you Hillel’s question: “If not now, when”? Put another way, “How long, O lord, how long”? Have we not been grinding our teeth long enough yet?
