Twenty-six years ago on this date, outside Chase, Md., there was a big train accident. This is in memory of the 16 who didn’t make it from the wreckage.

Some of us got to continue on with life after a moment or two of darkness and uncertainty, a split-second of collision, spinning and the swirling black. Life that has been bad and life that has been good and life that has been every possible point in-between, but life nonetheless. Some of us have had more than enough luck to last the rest of the way.

Meantime, we drink in remembrance of those whose lives did not get to go on.
